In the world of cinema, the annual Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera is the place to spot the stars as they walk the red carpet into the theatre for screenings of the latest movies.
It opens this year on July 6, giving a special guest appearance to Planet Earth itself. Not only is that famous red carpet now made of recyclable material, and the organisers are doing much else to reduce their carbon footprint, but a whole section of the festival is being dedicated to films about environmental subjects.
These include Bigger Than Us, which follows teenager Melati Wijsen’s campaign against plastic pollution in her home country Indonesia. You may remember Melati from the last issue of WoW! News magazine. Another to watch out for is Above Water by Aïssa Maïga, which follows a young girl in Niger, in west Africa, who has to walk for miles each day to fetch water for her family. Just like the girls in India we spoke about last week.
You can find out about all these films on the festival’s website here.
