The American president, Joe Biden, helped give Nature something to cheer about on Earth Day. He promised that the United States (US) would have cut its greenhouse gas emissions by half within 9 years.
He made the promise on Thursday, April 22, before an online meeting of leaders of big countries from around the world – they call it a “summit“. The plan is to get everyone to agree to do more to stop global warming, which is mostly caused by burning oil and gas.
Earth Day is a day to remind everyone what we need to do for our planet.
The day before, the European Union (EU), promised to cut its emissions of the gases that cause climate change by a bit more than half – 55 percent – by 2030. Like America, Europe wants to get to “net zero” emissions by 2050 – meaning it will not be putting any more greenhouse gases into the air.
The US and EU are the second and third biggest emitters, after China.
Of course, promises are one thing. Doing it is another. If we are to keep the promises made by Joe Biden and other politicians, we all need to change things about the way we eat, travel and make things. Keep reading WoW! News to hear about solutions people are finding to help us do just that!
