We know that cycling around town is good for the planet and for our health, but with so many cars still on the roads we have to take care to avoid accidents.
But over the past year of lockdowns, there’s been a boom in people cycling instead of taking buses and trains. And there’s good news now from research in France. It shows that if more and more of us get on our bikes, the safer we’ll be – because people in cars will take more care to avoid us.
More towns are making special bike lanes to make it easier to cycle. And those are also making a difference – adding a cycle lane on a street can cut the number cars speeding by more than half, the study showed.
More than 9 out of 10 French drivers said that if there’s a cycle lane in a street they will either slow down or at least keep a special lookout for bikes.
