Remembering that we can do great things if we really work at it is important when we consider problems that we face.
So we are happy to hear new research shows there is space in the world to plant billions of new trees.
Why?
Because trees take carbon dioxide out of our air. Burning oil, gas and coal in our machines and factories means we have too much of this gas, also called CO2. It is causing global warming, making our weather weirder and weirder.
Not only did we learn we could increase the number of trees in the world by over 50%, but we hear of more and more people planting them.
The Scottish government, for example, announced that Scots planted enough trees last year to cover 100 square kilometres – that’s about the size of Paris.
In France, the region of Brittany has just announced a plan to plant 5 million trees in five years.
Trees aren’t a perfect solution. But everyone can join in.
Felix Finkbeiner was just 9 years old when he launched Plant-for-the-Planet, a campaign to raise money for a United Nations target of planting a trillion – that’s a million million – trees. Felix and his friends have just launched a new smartphone app to make it easier!
