WoW! loved the story of young people and students getting active to help their community in Venice, the extraordinary and beautiful Italian city built on islands and canals which has suffered from terrible flooding in the past few weeks.
They call themselves the “Angels of the High Water” and have been organising over social media to help museums, libraries and churches save valuable books and other ancient items from the dirty sea-water that has poured in.
The salt in the water is particularly harmful to old books, and some of the volunteers call themselves “Angels of the Salt”.
The city is working on solutions to stop more frequent floods, including building a huge barrier to the sea. But in the meantime, we can cheer the spirit of community in Venice.
